Madeline Smith

Hello everyone!  My name is Madeline Smith and I teach 4th and 5th grade Math.  It is my first year at CME and I am so proud to be a LION!  Before coming to Plain Dealing I taught for 8 years in Caddo Parish.  I am excited to be a part of the Bossier Parish family.

I currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northwestern State University Natchitoches and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Louisiana State University Shreveport.  I love math and can't wait to use my experiences in education to help our students achieve greatness!

2017-2018 is going to be an AWESOME school year!

4th/5th Grade Math

What is Zearn?

This school year Bossier Parish has adopted a new math curriculum called Zearn.  Zearn is unique in that students learn two ways:  with the teacher in a traditional or small group setting, and alone online with digital lessons that follow right along with what we are doing in the classroom.  This innovative way of learning lets students experience the mathematical concepts being covered in multiple ways so that they can truly begin to understand through fluency, concept development, and independent practice.

What are Some Other Names I May See?

Zearn is a version of a more commonly known curriculum called Eureka Math/Engage New York.  You may see resources called Zearn, Eureka Math, or Engage New York.  Modules/Missions will be the same for any of these titles.

What is a Mission/Module?

In Zearn, we call units Missions or Modules.  If we are on Mission 1, this is the same as being on Unit 1.

What is a Flex Day?

You will see "Flex Day" come up a lot on our calendar.  A flex day is a day that students catch up on digital lessons, make up any missed work, or work with me one-on-one or in small groups on concepts they may need extra help on.

Helpful Links:

As I find links that I think will be beneficial to students, I will add them here.  I HIGHLY recommend this YouTube Channel.  It has every Mission/Module for all grade levels and shows teachers, parents, and students alike how problems can be solved.  This is an excellent resource for homework help and studying for tests!
