We are learning Larry Bell's 12 Powerful Words!

Hello!  I'm Ms. Pickard and this is my 28th year at Carrie Martin Elementary!  Time does fly when you're having fun!  I am looking forward to another great year of fun and working with you to help your child.

I introduced binders to my class last year and I felt it was very successful.  Again this year, each student will have a binder that they will bring home and return to school each day.  It will be a very important and useful tool of communication and will contain the following:

-a monthly behavior calendar

-communication sheet

-reading log for books read at home

-sight word list(HFW)

-alphabet and numbers to 100 practice sheets

-homework folder to return signed papers and homework

Please make sure you look at your child's binder every day and help promote good study habits by going over daily papers, HFW flash cards(sight words), completing homework, and reading with your child.  I am asking you to sign your child's binder daily and return it along with signed papers, homework with your child's name on it, and weekly signed Progress Reports with tests still attached.  I know this will be an effective way for us to communicate, as well as helping your child become a more responsible student.

Another thing I'd like to share with you is that Bossier Parish is implementing a new Math Series called Eureka Math.  Your child will daily:

  • practice fluency.
  • work on an application problem independently, with a partner or in a small group.
  • be instructed in developing the concept.
  • be guided in a conversation to debrief the problem set and process the lesson.

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to call me at my classroom number 318-759-2811 between 7:00-7:20 am, or during my planning period 12:05-1:05 pm.  If you leave a message, I will return your call ASAP.  If it is an emergency, please call the office at 318-759-2800.  You can also email me at

Thank you so much for sharing your child with me this year!

Kindergarten Sight Words ( High Frequency Words)

What is going on?

We stay really busy learning in Kindergarten, so every-once-in-a-while, we just have to get out of the classroom to learn while we also have some fun!

In September, we visited Cypress Nature Study Center, Benton, LA, with our PreK friends to learn more about nature and animals.

In December, we attended the new aquarium in Shreveport, LA for a school-wide field trip and picnic.  We also sang some songs in the Christmas program, which was attended by many parents and family members.

In February, we went to tour the Gemini Mardi Gras Museum, Bossier City, LA, with our 1st grade friends and also had a visit from Krewe of Artemis-Springhill Queen Diane Marie.

We have been enjoying every minute of it and end is in sight, but we aren't done yet!  We are looking forward to more learning and fun in Kindergarten!
